30. Describe the symptoms and possible causes for the following disorders: phobic disorders, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, somatoform disorders, dissociative disorders, schizophrenic disorders, and mood disorders.
Phobic disorders- involve persistent, irrational fears and avoidance of the situations or objects that induce these fears. They may be the most common form of anxiety.
-Causes: having something bad happen, like getting bit by a cat or dog. A panic attack, seeing something bad happen to someone else. Learning about something bad happening such as a plane crash
Generalized Anxiety Disorder- is a mental health condition in which a person is often worried or anxious about many things and finds it hard to control this anxiety.
-Causes: a family history of anxiety, recent or prolonged exposure to stressful situations, including personal or family illnesses, excessive use of caffeine or tobacco, or bing the victim of childhood abuse.
Panic Disorder- is a type of anxiety disorder in which you have repeated attacks of intense fear that something bad will happen.
-Causes: nothing is exact of the cause of panic disorder, but studies have shown that a combination of factors, including biological and environmental could be factors. One factor that has been shown is if there is a family history of panic attacks, it is likely that you could have a panic disorder. Sever stress, such as the death of a loved one, divorce, or losing a job could also trigger a panic attack. Mitral valve prolapse, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland), Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), Stimulant use (such as cocaine, caffeine), or medication withdrawal.
Obsessive- compulsive disorder- is an anxiety disorder in which people have unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, ideas, sensations (obsessions), or behaviors that make them feel driven to do something (compulsions).
-Causes: OCD, Biological and environmental factors. Biological factors is the way your body changes or brain functions. Where environmental factors are those such as infections and such.
Somatoform disorders- mental illnesses that cause bodily symptoms, including pain. The symptoms can't be traced back to any physical cause. And they are not the result of substance abuse or another mental illness.
-Causes: dramatic, emotional, vague terms, lack signs of defined medical illness, complaints that medical tests fail to support.
Dissociative disorders- are conditions that involve disruptions or breakdowns of memory, awareness, identity, or perception. People with dissociative disorders use dissociation, a defense mechanism, pathologically and involuntarily. Dissociative disorders are thought to primarily be caused by psychological trauma.
-Causes: coping with trauma, long-term physical, sexual or emotional abuse, or less often a home environment that is fighting, stress of war, or natural disasters, personal identity, stepping outside the box, or stressful life situations.
Schizophrenic disorders- social withdrawal, hostility or suspiciousness, deterioration of personal hygiene, inability to cry or express joy, inappropriate laughter or crying, depression, oversleeping or insomnia, odd or irrational statements, forgetful; unable to concentrate, extreme reaction to criticism, strange use of words or a way of speaking.
-Causes: genetic cause of schizophrenia, environmental causes ( low oxygen levels during birth, physical or sexual abuse in children), abnormal brain structure, or relationship problems.
Mood disorders- feeling sadness, hopelessness, helplessness or guilt, suicidal thoughts, fatigue, changes in appetite, irritability, difficulty concentrating, trouble engaging in daily tasks and relationships, body aches, difficulty sleeping,
-Causes: it is unknown, linked to chemicals in the brain. This regulates moods, feelings and behaviors.
